Nordic Packraft Round Up 2024
On the last weekend of June, over 50 packrafters from Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Germany, the UK, and Norway gathered in Dala-Floda to share experiences, learn new skills, and socialize with fellow packraft enthusiasts as part of the annual Nordic Packraft Round Up.
With packrafting gaining popularity, we at Kajaktiv wanted to support the community, help it grow, and promote it as a fun and exciting sport. At the same time, we aimed to assist newcomers to white water paddling in learning basic safety and skill sets in a friendly and encouraging environment.
After chatting with Jeremie Lammert about recent paddler meetings in Finland and Norway, it made perfect sense to offer Kajaktiv, along with Flodaforsfare (the local club), as hosts for the 2024 gathering at Lissfors. This location was ideal for running clinics, courses, and having a blast on the river.
On Thursday morning, two groups began a two-day course on basic and advanced river running skills, including self-rescue, paddle techniques, and river navigation. Lissfors served as the perfect classroom for these activities. The courses continued on Friday, and by that afternoon, around 50 people had registered for the weekend, filling up the car park and all available tent spaces.
Saturday was the main day of the gathering, featuring several fun clinics, such as surfing, boat repair with Garrett from Alpacka Packrafts, and a thrilling packraft boater X race held in heats down Lissfors. The race was not only exciting to participate in but also a delight for spectators watching from the clubhouse deck overlooking the slalom course. The winners was Edvin Mellergårdfrom from Sweden.
That evening, Johan Grönblad gave an inspiring talk about how he plans and packs for multi-day trips, followed by a captivating film from Huw Miles on packrafting in New Zealand. Before the next packraft film from Chris Burkard, showcasing paddling in Iceland, there was a prize-giving ceremony for the Boater X race. Prizes from Hiko Sport, including a Valkyrie Air 4 drysuit won by Iro-Matias from Finland and new Hiko Eagle and Hawk throw bags awarded to two other participants, were raffled off.
In true Kajaktiv fashion, we sponsored and cooked delicious spicy hamburgers for everyone. As they enjoyed the food, a Finnish paddler strummed his guitar and sang into the late evening sun while the sauna heated up, much to the delight of the Finns. It was a perfect evening!
On Sunday morning, many participants began their journey home, but some stayed and joined Fred from Guidestugan for a customized packraft orientated two-day rescue course for those wanting more knowledge about what to do if things go wrong.
For us at Kajaktiv, what made the whole five days special was witnessing the camaraderie and the exceptionally friendly openness everyone had toward each other. We appreciated how ideal Lissfors was for packrafting, and its central location made it possible for so many to attend.
From the bottom of our hearts, we at Kajaktiv, including myself ( James), Jeremie, Fredrik, and others, want to say thank you to everyone who came and made this one of the most memorable weekends in Lissfors’s history. We hope to see you all again soon.
