Whitewater Kayaking Course in Dalarna

Welcome to Kajaktiv and Dala-Floda located in the heart of Dalarna. During this course, you will learn the basics of whitewater kayaking and after two days of practice in the rapids, you will be able to navigate down class-2 rapids with style. If you have kayaked long-distance before, this whitewater kayaking course will make you a better long-distance paddler.

Our facility is beautifully situated just a stone’s throw from the rapids, and at our course center, you can also relax in our wood-fired sauna and hot SPA pool.

Everyone attending the whitewater kayaking course will receive a 20% discount on neoprene shoes, gloves, and hats in our store during the course weekend.

What to Bring

  • Bed linen (if you are staying overnight)

  • Straps for glasses or extra contact lenses
  • Water bottle
  • Gloves (if it’s cold)
  • Base layer in functional material (if it’s cold)

Content: Whitewater Course, Step 1

Day 1

  • Welcome and introduction
  • We go through equipment and basic safety
  • Swimming in rapids (floating downstream on your back for about 30 meters)
  • Practice capsizing the kayak and emptying it of water
  • We practice basic paddling techniques
  • High and low braces
  • Easy traversing in flowing water (class 1)
  • Lunch at the restaurant (included in the price)
  • Whitewater paddling in a class 2 rapid
  • Exercises where we practice paddling in and out of eddies

Day 2

  • Whitewater paddling and a longer trip in a class 2 rapid
  • We practice reading water in a rapid and choosing the right line
  • Lunch at the restaurant (included in the price)
  • Whitewater paddling in a class 2 rapid
  • Various exercises in the rapids
  • Practice Eskimo roll for those who want
  • Course summary
  • Return home

NOTE! The structure of the courses may vary depending on the condition of the rapids, the participants’ level of knowledge, and plans for the return journey on day 2. The instructor will go through all of this during the introduction on day 1.

What Prerequisites are Required?

  • You should be able to swim.
  • No other prerequisites are required.

Age Limit

  • Age limit 18 years.
  • 14 years in the company of a guardian.
  • Contact us if there are individuals younger than 14 years who wish to participate in the whitewater course.

Train and bus connections

You can take the train to Borlänge or Djurås from most major cities in Sweden. From there, you can then take a bus to Dala-Floda.

More than just whitewater paddling

We highly recommend that you bring your mountain bike, running shoes, or hiking boots. Here in Dala-Floda, you will find great trails for cycling, running, and hiking, and our staff are happy to share their favorites. The village is also worth exploring if you have some time to spare, and right next to it you have Lake Flosjön which invites you for a swim. You can rent a kayak for the day if you want to explore the lake with its beautiful beaches and swimming opportunities.
